Forming an opportunity belief

I believe there is an opportunity to solve the problem of a lack of childcare in various cities in Gainesville being plagued by poverty. I would like to solve with problem with something that has more weight than a simple band-aid to the issue. The need that I would like to focus on is the insufficient childcare opportunities for people who have less than ideal lives. This is something that won’t run only through the day but a solution that would be open 24 hours of the day. This need is mostly found in neighborhoods that house a lot of minorities, single family households, and within the homeless community. This need has always existed, and it’s only getting worse with time. My attention is on this need because of observation. Being raised in a somewhat sheltered family, and now coming into adulthood the world isn’t looking as cheery as my family raised me to believe. Being aware of these issues that have been around longer than me is just the beginning, making an actual change and promoting a less complicated wage of life is the ultimate goal. The people within this community are doing as much as they can with the resources they have. There are many homeless shelters, and places for kids to go to that they can get the necessary things to become model citizens, such as after school programs. But, sadly that isn’t enough, they need more than what their community can offer them at this time. The poverty rate in Gainesville is about 33.6%, and many of these people have children, who are not getting everything they need to get because of their family’s financial issues. The prototypical customer are those people who suffer from poverty, while also having to care for children. When coming up with this opportunity I thought it’ll be wise to interview a person who themselves ran an operation to help people burdened with poverty, a single mother, and then just a person who has to fight homelessness. The need is simply the disadvantage that children being raised in these types of environments have to deal with constantly. This isn’t a need that has just arisen but one that has been around for generations. This need is constantly in the forefront of their mind, because they see it everywhere they look. This need is being met, but not at its fullest extent. My vision is to provide somewhere for parents to be able to bring their kids, and the kids are able to get help with homework, eat food, and go somewhere that is a positive environment. It’s also to help the parents try to better themselves, by being able to go to work, and not have to worry about not having a babysitter because of money, or time issues. The solution that is in place right now is wonderful, because they are receiving some type of help, but they are in need of more than the help being provided to the, now. One thing I learned about my opportunity was the statistical difference between students facing poverty, versus their peers who aren’t and their success rate in school. Home troubles literally follow these children no matter where they go, or what they do. Additionally, the negative views that our society has for homeless, and less fortunate people is sickening. They actually want todo better but they are constrained by lack of resources, and a never ending cycle that they are essentially stuck in. In a sense I know that more research needs to be done on my end, but this issue is real, and it’s not as easy as I believed it to be, but the opportunity is still there. It just needs someone with means, opportunity, and heart to come in and try to help make a difference. There is definitely an upside to adapting, specifically for this issue, because this is for the people and not every community’s needs are one size fits all. I believe an entrepreneur would do so much more with their product by listening to their consumers and what they want and need.

  1. Hi Elly,
I think it's amazing that you wrote about this cause and feel so passionate about it. It is definitely a very serious issue facing Gainsville and something that the Gator Nation should work to solve. You did a very god job gathering research and forming an educated analysis of the situation and finding that root cause of the problem. Your idea of providing a space for children to be and get the resources they need to be successful is phenomenal and should be implemented.
