Title: Parents Resistance Thwarts Local School Desegregation Efforts

This article focused on a specific problem in Howard Country, Maryland, but an issue that exists all around our country. They were essentially trying to make all the students in that county receive the same education, and less about the students socioeconomic status. They wanted to change the school distribution lines, give the poorer schools more funding, and try to create diversity within the halls of these schools. But as you can imagine this received a lot of backlash from the people in the community. Parallels between this story and the story we all know Brown v. Board of Education, were thrown throughout the whole article. We know that it’s illegal to have segregated schools, but this county and many others have found many loopholes to get what they want; which is the oppression of minorities. The problem doesn’t just lie within one person, people everywhere is experiencing this problem. Additionally, it also doesn’t lie within one racial group, every group has people who are for and against trying to fix this problem.

Title: Local vape shops lose profits due to recent tobacco law

Many smoke shops in Gainesville have reported a loss in sales, because of the new law. This law that our president recently passed back in October, which prevents anyone under the age of 21 to buy any tobacco related products. The owners who had a chance to comment on this topic don’t really agree with it. For multiple reasons, the first being that they are losing money, and business. Another reason is because they believe that they are helping people. Many of these owners were once cigarette smokers, and have changed to vaping to rid themselves of this unhealthy habit. Through their businesses they believe they were helping their customers do the same. Additionally, many people don’t think that it’s right to allow an 18 year old to make a sound decision about fighting for our country, but not allowing them to make one about wether or not they would want to partake in these types of activities. Many good points were brought up such as the law was put into place to help decrease the amount of lung - related deaths within this community. Additionally, the fact remains that these teens were able to get what they wanted through the legal means, and this law doesn’t change anything other then they way they obtain these products. This new law mainly hurts people who sell these products because they are losing a big portion of their customers. But it also hurts the people who aren’t able to obtain these products through the legal means, they are now forced to deal with their issues in an illegal way which puts them in greater risk of dying, and now they are able to face legal charges.

Title: ‘Immaturity’ costing UF
Link: https://www.alligator.org/sports/basketball/immaturity-costing-uf/article_2ac30f78-40c7-11ea-8d53-6fb89b3f7b81.html

This article focused on our schools basketball team. I don’t really keep up with the sports here at UF, but according to this article the basketball team isn’t doing that well, and the coach isn’t too happy about their performance this season. As reported in this article the coach even decided to praise their opponent, after being so fed up with the performance in a game. He believed the team got too comfortable. They decided they were so great with their defensive side that they didn’t need to keep up the work. But, on the bright side their offensive side, which they were slacking in, had improved greatly. The coaches only so upset because he knows his team, he knows how great they are, and he doesn’t believe they’re playing to the level he knows he can play. This problem lies within two parties; the coach, and his players. I say this because they are basically two halves of one, you can’t really have a team with no one to lead, and you can’t have a leader with no one to be led. Additionally they both have to deal with these losses, that they have been facing throughout the season, work together, and become a better working unit.

Title: Future of Gainesville Lucky’s market remains unclear
Link: https://www.alligator.org/news/future-of-gainesville-lucky-s-market-remains-unclear/article_158d3cc4-426f-11ea-9004-cffc3a103c6e.html

This article focused on the grocery store chain Lucky’s. There were many speculations about the future of this store. The employees hadn’t really been told anything, but the company did file for bankruptcy. Rumors were floating that a store down the street from Lucky’s called Aldi was buying the property. The problem within this story is that no one has any real, concrete information. They’re all scared, and the whole situation is basically just being speculated upon. But the bigger issue is the loss of this market ultimately. Many people, are going to be without jobs, and have to start looking for employment elsewhere. The workers, are the main ones being affected by this issue. Many have families, and responsibilities and this job helps them take care of things. Now they have to stress about so many things, and no real ability to fight effectively. They are now forced to come up with different solutions to try to keep their lives from falling apart with little time to do so.

Title: Students protest Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ arrival

Essentially, UF’s law school wanted to protest the arrival of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. This uproar from our students stemmed from our schools lack of proper acknowledgement of his past. He was reported to be involved with a sexual assault case back in 1991. The students believed that his presence would be ultimately negative, and only showed how much the university didn’t care about their students and an issue that most of their students have experienced. This problem is one that is very complex for many reasons. He wasn’t convicted of sexual assault and believed that the case only came up as a way to keep him from being on the Supreme Court. So it could be viewed as another man in history not being held accountable for his actions, but it can also be viewed as exactly what he said it to be. But, to even be accused of sexual assault is alarming in and of itself. But I personally believe that our school should take that into account because they are putting our students at risk by exposing them to someone capable of something so bad, but also because they are enabling him. Enabling in a sense that helps him think he is above the law, and that he can do whatever and say whatever because of his position in society, when that isn’t the case. This problem effects everyone, but mainly the person being blocked from being on campus by the students, and the students who are triggered by these events.

  1. Hey Elly,

I also mentioned the protests occurring at UF's law school. I actually knew nothing about it until I saw the news report. The basketball news on the other hand is not surprising to me at all. As most students are saying, I completely agree that our team has a huge coaching issue that needs to be fixed. In my opinion, our head coach needs to go in order for this team to compete to its full potential.

  2. Hi Elly,
You did a very good job completing this assignment. I think you hit all points required and you answered all the questions. You also did a very goof job analyzing each the articles you found. I was particularly interested in the game about the basketball team. I love basketball but I've never really kept up with the UF basketball team, but I hope they are able to live up to the potential their coach believes they have.
